In the build up to the start of the MA Fine Art course, I’ve felt quite stuck because I don’t yet have a firm creative medium.
I feel like I have a really strong “Why” — to express externally my own inner journey and experiences during meditation. eg. Blocked energies, energy centres opening, absorption states, experiencing the pull of the void etc.
I’m deeply passionate about the content and there’s a strong desire to somehow express this externally — but I’m not passionate about any one medium at the moment. I don’t have a “How”.
I’ve toyed over the past few weeks (albeit not extensively) with inks, watercolours, pastels, charcoals, gradients, pencils etc but they all seem rather flat and uninspiring compared to the intensity and dimensionality of what I’m experiencing internally.
I totally appreciate I’ve not given these mediums much of a chance but there’s nothing that’s grabbed me so far to want to continue. Perhaps it’s a case of just pushing through?
However, reflecting on it, the content during meditation isn’t conceptual or intellectual—it’s experiential, somatic, energetic. ie. sensations: opening, absorption, blockage, the magnetic pull of emptiness. These are felt experiences in the body, shifts in consciousness, movements of energy.

The traditional art forms (to date) feel a bit flat or static compared to the living, moving, transformational experiences I’m trying to express.
My subject matter is process — energy moving, centres activating, states dissolving into other states.
What if the question isn’t “which medium?” but “what qualities does the medium need?”
