Moving beyond flat backgrounds, I experimented with layering the moiré patterns over a salt lamp to explore how texture and light could create a softer, more organic quality.

Moiré effect tests with film photography backgrounds
Inspired by Boris Mikhailov’s “Yesterday’s Sandwich” at The Photographers’ Gallery, I revisited my photographs shot on my Canon AE-1 film camera. I was looking for organic, natural images with minimal visual complexity, and in some cases, a central focal point to complement the bindu (centre point) of the moiré effect patterns.

Moiré effect test on acetate and mirror
Following my gallery visit and seeing Olafur Eliasson’s “Seeing Tilted Mirrors,” I was keen to test how mirrors might interact with my moiré patterns. This experiment places printed acetate sheets over a mirror to explore how reflection affects the patterns and adds another layer of visual complexity.

Gallery visits: Unexpected inspiration for moiré experiments
Some highlights from my recent visits to Saatchi Gallery and The Photographers’ Gallery that provided an unexpected direction for developing my current experiments.

Developing the moiré effect: Combining different patterns
Adding a completely different pattern as a second layer introduces unexpected depth, intricacy and becomes more visually engaging.

Exploring moiré effects with layered acetate prints
Inspired by recent research, I created a series of geometric patterns to explore moiré effects – the mesmerising interference patterns that emerge when repetitive designs overlap.

Proposed system for first experiments
Enough research, here are the steps I’ll take to run my first experiments. Soto’s trajectory has inspired me—starting at pattern creation with the potential to scale up to immersive installations.

Ryoji Ikeda at 180 Studios
Described as “a total sensory encounter that transforms vast datasets into an immersive audiovisual environment, exploring the intersection of art and physics on an unprecedented scale,” visitors lie beneath a huge LED ceiling while being enveloped by intense soundscapes.

Space observation parallels with Kinetic art
These NASA images of the comet 3I/ATLAS appeared on my news feed yesterday and I instantly noticed a connection to the perceptual phenomena and artist research I’m doing.
